ABOUT

During the Second World War, women stepped into roles that had long been considered the domain of men. With large numbers of men serving on the frontlines, women entered factories, shipyards, and airfields, taking on assembly-line work, machining, engineering, and even ferrying military aircraft from production plants to bases.

This unprecedented shift was born out of necessity, but it carried profound implications. Women proved themselves fully capable in technical, mechanical, and industrial roles that society had previously closed to them.

Although many were asked to leave these jobs after the war to make way for returning servicemen, the experience had left its mark.

It challenged traditional gender norms and laid the groundwork for future generations of women in science, technology, and engineering.

Yet, despite these advances from more than a century ago, women continue to be underrepresented and rarely associated with the workforce that move the world. Visual culture too has often reinforced this gap, frequently placing women only in glamour, nature, or domestic contexts.

Rosh’s latest works from the Facets series portrays women in a backdrop of abstract machines and machinery components, to put focus on one of the sides that’s obscured.

Rosh’s artworks go through laborious processes that involves meticulous composition, design, photography, and fabrication.

A lot of thought process, research, material selection and testing are undergone even before he picks the canvas and paints.

There’s a lot more going on than what you see on the canvas, especially the failures – at times with little to no salvage.

His subjects are real people whom he knows personally, worked with, or were inspired by, and he tries to create the environment, machinery, and colour palette that suits their personality.

The faces are rendered with numerous layers to capture the essence of the subject, and the semi-abstract machines are designed and laid out aesthetically with utmost precision.

Yet the machines and the faces coexist and lends their character and liveness to each other.  The whole canvas becomes a snapshot of a running assembly line where humans and machines coexist and interact.

Although his attempt is to highlight women in traditionally male-dominated domains, there’s an interplay between humans and machines that Rosh portrays knowingly or unknowingly.

There is jostling for space and precedence going on in his canvas between humans and machines, as in the real world that is getting invaded with technology, automation, and machinery.
